A public hearing on the Park Avenue 4-to-3-Lane Conversion Project, and a discussion on chickens highlight the Muscatine City Council meeting at 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, May 7. Two Muscatine Police officers will also be recognized for their life saving efforts on Thursday and a proclamation recognizing May 16 as Peace Officers Memorial Day will also be made.
Officer Recognition
Officer Whitni Pena will be presented the Life Saving Award and Officer Jolisa Colman will be presented the Medal of Valor during recognition ceremonies during the conference call Thursday.
Park Avenue 4- to 3-Lane Conversion
Improving traffic safety without limiting traffic flow is the biggest benefit Muscatine residents and visitors will see from a “road diet”, or a 4- to 3-lane conversion, project that will improve Park Avenue from Harrison Street to the Iowa 92 bridge this year.

Chickens
Muscatine City Code 10-29-3c states that the keeping of farm the animals, including chickens, medium farm type animals, or large farm type animals is prohibited on parcels under two acres. The topic, placed on the agenda by Council Member Dwayne Hopkins, will be a discussion on the benefits and/or consequences of allowing small farm animals on parcels of less than two acres.
Peace Officers Memorial Day
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Peace Officers Memorial Day honors local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty.
Since May 10, 1839, the men and women of the Muscatine Police Department have protected the rights and freedoms of its citizens. Their efforts have come with a heavy price. In the history of the Muscatine Police Department four of its members have been killed in the line of duty. The department continues to honor their memory by furthering the work they began all those years ago. Officer Thomas Moore, Muscatine’s first line of duty death, was only the second law enforcement officer killed in Iowa’s history.
