Water and Resource Recovery Facility sustainability efforts

The Water and Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) of Muscatine formally known as the Water Pollution Control Plant has been working for about 7 years on a waste energy project. In February it completed phase one of the project, which enabled the facility to receive organic waste from throughout the Midwest.

Going forward, the facility is looking for projects that “Encapsulate People, Planet and Profit-the three P’s of sustainability,” stated Jon Koch, WRRF’s Director.

Koch feels the new Muscatine Organics Recycling Center (MORC) hits on all three of these targets. His presentation lays out several new ways that the facility may be able to recover nutrients and other contaminants from wastewater that couldn’t have been done previously. As he so succinctly said “Resource recovery within our utility is helping to reclaim more than just water. It aims to be a center for resources that enhance our community, protects the environment and creates economic opportunities.”
