First doses of vaccine should be in Muscatine County in next few weeks

The Muscatine County Public Health (MCPH) department anticipates receiving a limited shipment of vaccines for Muscatine County medical professionals within the next few weeks. MCPH has been given concrete guidance from the state of Iowa who the designated recipients are of the initial doses of vaccine being released to public health departments.

MCPH wants the county community members to know that everyone in the county is a priority to them as we work through distribution of the vaccine following the guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health.

MCPH has been directed to distribute the first round of the limited vaccines to medical professionals in the next two weeks. These are the people at highest risk of exposure due to their job. Through a collaborative agreement, pharmacies will be receiving and distributing vaccines to the long-term care facilities. These are the individuals at highest risk of complications due to their phase of life.

“As we continue to receive additional guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health on vaccine distributions and targeted populations we will share with the respective groups of people in the county,” Christy Roby Williams, Director Muscatine County Public Health, said. “We anticipate that the entire vaccination process will take several months.”

MCPH will continue to receive guidance from federal and state entities for additional information on vaccine distribution expectations. Once the information becomes available MCPH will communicate plans with the general public. For the facts on the COVID-19 vaccine please visit the CDC for information: COVID-19 vaccine facts.

In the meantime, MCPH asks that everyone continue to follow the precautionary measures known to be effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19. It will take several months for the vaccine to be distributed so it is vital that current mitigation efforts, like masks and social distancing, continue to be practiced in order to reduce your chance of being exposed to the virus or spreading it to others.

Together, the COVID-19 vaccination and following the CDC’s recommendations to protect yourself and others will offer the best protection from COVID-19.
