Eastern Iowa farmer nears planting finish line

An eastern Iowa farmer is poised to be done planting by the end of the month.

Jeff Pape of Dyersville tells Brownfield it’s been a while since he’s experienced a spring as smooth as this one.

“The ground is in beautiful shape, we have good moisture underneath (since) we don’t work the ground (because we’re) no-till. And after we plant, we’re seeing some of the best looking conditions we’ve seen in a long time.”

Pape is finished with his corn and soybean acres and is near the finish line custom planting.

“I’ve probably got another three days left after (Wednesday) and we should that wrapped up, so we’re in very good shape.”

Pape rarely completes planting in April, saying most years it drags into mid-May.
