Governor Reynolds signs order to create Iowa’s first carbon sequestration task force
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has signed an executive order creating a carbon sequestration task force.
Iowa Renewable Fuels Association executive director Monte Shaw tells Brownfield biofuels could play a key role as members explore opportunities.
“As I understand it, the state is going to be looking for ways to remove any barriers to these types of projects, as well as looking for ways to position Iowa farmers and businesses to take advantage of opportunities in the carbon sequestration area.”
He sees opportunities for renewable fuels like corn ethanol and biodiesel, saying they have a real glidepath toward being a carbon-negative fuel.
“When you compare (them) to things live EV’s (electric vehicles), solar, and wind, while they can be very low-carbon, no part of that process ever takes carbon out of the atmosphere like a plant does when it grows. So that’s our real advantage.”
Shaw has seen some of the names appointed to the task force and says there are people from a wide variety of industries including agriculture and biofuels.
