The east half of the intersection of Park Avenue and Washington Street will be closed to traffic for at least one week according to officials with the Department of Public Works. The closure will begin at 7 a.m. Monday (July 26) and extend at least through the end of work on Friday (July 30).

The closure is necessary to modify the slope of the intersection coming off of Highway 22/Washington Street onto Park Avenue. While the current slope is within the specifications of the Park Avenue 4-to-3 Lane Conversion Project approved by the Iowa Department of Transportation, the City has asked the contractor to extend and modify the transition area.
There is some potential good news for Muscatine drivers as the Iowa Avenue intersection with 2nd Street is tentatively scheduled to reopen at the end of the day on Monday (July 26) as the 2nd Street Streetscape project continues west into the 100 block of West 2nd Street. Sidewalk replacement work will begin next week in that block with one lane of traffic being maintained at all times.
Changes may also be coming to the Grandview and Oregon/Warren intersection as work continues in the Grandview Avenue Reconstruction Project. That intersection has been closed for the past several weeks as underground work is completed. Traffic has been detoured around the intersection while Grandview Avenue remains one lane from Pearl to Musser.
The intersection potentially could reopen to one lane of traffic next week if underground work can be completed. At the same time, contractor is prepping Warren for repaving and has begun preparations for repaving Grandview from Pearl to the railroad tracks just south of the Oregon intersection.
Paving is also anticipated in the next two weeks as part of Phase 5 of the West Hill Sanitary and Storm Sewer Separation Project. Preparations to repave a portion of West 8th Street from the bottom of the hill up to Climer will begin next week.
In addition, Muscatine Power & Water indicates that a portion of Whicher Street where a new water main was installed will be repaved in the next two weeks.
Drivers are reminded to slow down and use caution when travelling through the construction zone, obey traffic control devices, and be aware of workers. Use an alternate route if possible.
