Iowa crop update mentions corn at maturity and sudden death syndrome in soybeans

There are scattered reports of corn reaching maturity in Iowa.

The latest crop report from USDA says corn development is about five days ahead of normal, with 47 percent at the dent stage or beyond.  Some farmers have also begun chopping corn for silage.

Iowa’s corn condition rating remained at 58 percent good to excellent.

For soybeans, 95 percent are setting pods and five percent are coloring.  The condition rating improved three percentage points on the week to 61 percent good to excellent.

There are reports of sudden death syndrome in some soybean fields across the state.

Oat harvest reached 97 percent, and the third cutting of alfalfa is just shy of 70 percent.
