14% of Iowa corn has reached maturity

Crop development is close to normal as harvest approaches in Iowa.

The latest weekly crop report from USDA says 14 percent of corn has reached maturity, which is equal to the five-year average.

Corn rated good to excellent is 60 percent, with crop reporters mentioning damage from heavy rain, hail, and strong winds in the northeast and west-central parts of the state.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 10 percent, two days ahead of normal, with 61 percent considered to be in good to excellent condition.

The third cutting of alfalfa is 88 percent done, four days faster than average.
