AUDIO: Muskies hit the road again after home opener loss

Another tough week last week for Muscatine High as they fell to Iowa City West 42-7.

Similar issues to the week one matchup at Linn-Mar loomed for the Muskies. The offense failed to get going at some key points in the game and the defense found their backs to the wall many times.

There is a lot to work to do before they face long time conference opponent Bettendorf High School this Friday.

However, even with a tough score like this one, there was obvious improvement for the Muskies. After a slow week one start, sophomore running back Ty Cozad was able to be more productive in the backfield with 58 rushing yards.

Junior QB Landon Battey is showing more comfort in the pocket as a passer and is due for a big game. On special teams there was another big performance, this time junior return specialist Brayden Lane with a huge 94 yard return that led to a later touchdown.

Our Toyota of Muscatine Player of the Game went to senior tight end Nolan Recker who put together 80 total yards and one rushing touchdown.

Here’s what Recker had to say about being back home and what to look forward to in the future:

The Muskies are heading to the Quad Cities to take on the Bettendorf Bulldogs who are also sitting at an 0-2 record this season.

Last week they took a tough loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 28-7 and another week one loss to Urbandale 13-3.

It’s clear that it’s going to come down to whoever’s defense can hold out the longest, as both offenses show to have been lackluster this season with a combined three touchdowns between both teams.

Here’s what head coach DJ Hawkins had to say about last week and his team moving forward through the season.
