Potential federal government shutdown would hurt agriculture

By Filed Under: Congress, News

The federal government is at risk of shutting down if Congress doesn’t act this week which would have a negative impact on agriculture.

If the fiscal year ends on Thursday without a funding mechanism in place, federal payments to farmers would be paused and USDA offices all over the country would be forced to close. Supplemental food aid would also be threatened.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the government will run out of money to pay its bills on October 18th if Congress doesn’t increase its ability to issue debt.
