Muscatine City Council to be asked to proceed with South End Improvement Projects

The Muscatine City Council will be asked to authorize proceeding with four South End Community Improvement Fund projects, and to approve the contract for the 2021-2022 Hot Mix Asphalt Overlay Project when the Council convenes at 7 p.m. Thursday (October 7) in the Council Chambers of Muscatine City Hall.

A virtual meeting will also be held in conjunction with the in-person meeting for those who want to view the proceedings or make a comment but do not feel comfortable in attending in person. (details are below).

The Muscatine City Council will hear a request to proceed with four South End Community Improvement Fund projects that will improve a select street crossing along with designated park improvements. A public open house on the projects was held on September 29 at Taylor Park.

A steering committee has worked with City staff to develop a scope of projects that are intended to improve the quality of life in the South End of Muscatine. The improvements were vetted through public meetings, Park and Recreation Advisory Commission meetings, and past project requests received from the Muscatine community. The four projects will be funded through a $2 million private donation.

The Department of Public Works has compiled a list of streets and alleys to be included in the 2021/2022 Hot Mix Asphalt Overlay Project. The streets and alleys tentatively included for the 2021/2022 program were selected from a matrix developed to rank streets and alleys in Muscatine. Brandt Construction Company was the apparent low responsive, responsible low bidder at $485,305.

Thursday’s City Council meeting is open to the public. Citizens attending the meeting are asked to follow current CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommendations for wearing a mask indoors whether vaccinated or not. The City of Muscatine does not require wearing a mask, but does urge the public to follow Public Health and CDC recommendations.

Citizens who do not want to attend the in-person meeting can watch and/or participate through the GoToMeeting virtual meeting portal. Information on joining the session and how to make a comment during the meeting is listed below. The session will also be broadcast live on the City of Muscatine YouTube channel and on Muscatine Power & Water Cable Channel 2.

Information on the presentations and other agenda items can be found by clicking AGENDA to download the October 7, 2021, City Council agenda and/or attachments.
