Council to discuss deferred firefighter positions Thursday

The Muscatine City Council will discuss options for restoring one or two of the deferred firefighter positions, and will be asked to approve the contract for the 2021-2022 Full Depth Patching Project when the Council convenes at 7 p.m. Thursday (October 21) in the Council Chambers of Muscatine City Hall.

A virtual meeting will also be held in conjunction with the in-person meeting for those who want to view the proceedings or make a comment but do not feel comfortable in attending in person. (details are below).

Three firefighter positions slated to be filled in the 2021-2022 fiscal year were deferred by the City Council in 2020 due to concerns over revenue impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. Several council members have indicated that now that the city has a better idea of the revenue impacts it might be time to discuss fillings one or two of those positions.

The Department of Public Works has compiled a list of streets and alleys to be included in the 2021/2022 Full Depth Patching Project. The streets and alleys tentatively included for the 2021/2022 program were selected from a matrix developed to rank streets and alleys in Muscatine. Heuer Construction, Inc.,was the apparent low responsive, responsible low bidder at $440,800.

Thursday’s City Council meeting is open to the public. Citizens attending the meeting are asked to follow current CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommendations for wearing a mask indoors whether vaccinated or not. The City of Muscatine does not require wearing a mask, but does urge the public to follow Public Health and CDC recommendations.
