An eastern Iowa farmer calls his first trip to the State of Mato Grosso in west-central Brazil “eye opening.”
Robb Ewoldt is a corn and soybean grower who also raises hogs and cattle near Davenport.
“The size and scale is just beyond comprehension. You could drive for 200 miles and see nothing but soybean fields when we were down there.”
The Iowa Soybean Association president tells Brownfield Brazil is only going to become more competitive as an ag exporter.
“It’s scary in my mind for the U.S. farmer to compete with Brazil right now. They have a lot more land they can put into production, so it’s a concern. But I also think we have a lot better chance using up our crop domestically in the near future, so I think it’s not as bad.”
Ewoldt says Brazilian farmers are good at what they do and “are a force to be reckoned with in the global market.”
