Two to be sworn into Muscatine Fire Department, Lifesaving Award to be presented at Thursday’s City Council meeting

Two individuals will be sworn into service as members of the Muscatine Fire Department while a Muscatine Police officer will be presented the Lifesaving Award during the Thursday (July 7) Muscatine City Council meeting. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Muscatine City Hall, 215 Sycamore Street, Muscatine, Iowa.

A virtual meeting will be held in conjunction with the in-person meeting for those who want to view the proceedings or make a comment but do not feel comfortable in attending in person. Details for joining that meeting are listed below. 

City of Muscatine Mayor Brad Bark will lead Joe Colon and Mike Fleming as they recite and affirm their oath of office as a member of the Muscatine Fire Department. Mayor Bark will also present the Lifesaving Award to Lt. Jeff Jirak of the Muscatine Police Department later in the meeting.

Two public hearings are on the agenda for Thursday. The first public hearing concerns the plans, specifications, form of contract, and cost estimates for the proposed 67th Avenue Sidewalk Improvement Project. The two-year project will be sent out for bid once approved by the Muscatine City Council.

The second public hearing regards an proposed application for a Community Development Block Grant to support the Mulberry Neighborhood Revitalization Pilot Project. The findings of a Community Needs Assessment will be presented to Council and the public during the hearing along with what activities the city anticipates pursing to address those needs. 

Thursday’s City Council meeting is open to the public. Citizens who do not want to attend the in-person meeting can watch and/or participate through the GoToMeeting virtual meeting portal. The session will also be broadcast live on the City of Muscatine YouTube channel and on Muscatine Power & Water Cable Channel 2.
