City seeking public input on updating ATE code; indoor sports complex Thursday – Voice Of Muscatine

The Muscatine City Council will conduct two public hearings on Thursday, June 20, with the first hearing on proposed changes to the Automated Traffic Enforcement Ordinance and the second on the proposed Indoor Sports Complex.

The Muscatine City Council will also meet on June 27 for a regular meeting. This meeting was moved up from July 4 due to the first Thursday of July also being the Fourth of July holiday. The City Council will have their regularly scheduled in-depth session on July 11 and their regular session on July 18.

The Muscatine Police Department will be updating the Automated Traffic Enforcement Ordinance to match the state code that was passed by the state legislature and signed by the Governor this year. Police officials are seeking public input prior to formalizing the code changes and presenting them to the City Council for adoption.

The second public hearing is on the plans and specifications for the proposed Indoor Sports Complex that will be located at the Muscatine Soccer West site across from the Muscatine Soccer Complex. The project includes the construction of an indoor, temperature-controlled, multi-use facility that will consist of a synthetic turf field, an inflatable year-round dome structure, with restrooms and a concession area on site. The facility will be able to host regulation football, soccer, softball, baseball, pickleball, and general group gatherings.

If the City Council approves the plans and specifications, the project will be placed out for bids later this week. The tentative schedule for competition of the project is the winter of 2024/2025.

In other action items, the City Council be asked to:

  • Set a public hearing on July 18 to change City Code to allow the establishment of a law enforcement training facility and range;
  • Approve the contract and bond with SulzCo, LLC, for the $442,172.25 Weed Park Lagoon Project;
  • Approve a $36,630 purchase order to ZWB Construction for the demolition of the old deck and the installation of a new observation deck as part of the Weed Park Lagoon Project; and,
  • Approve two agreements with RDG Planning & Design, Inc., for the development of a Comprehensive Plan, and for the implementation of  Commercial Façade Activity of the Mulberry Neighborhood Revitalization Grant.

The City of Muscatine will no longer be offering a virtual option for the City Council meetings following consensus by the Muscatine City Council to discontinue the virtual meeting.
