At 0042hrs on September 18, 2024, crews from West Liberty Fire and Ambulance were dispatched by MUSCOM to the area of the 1200 block of Elder Avenue, West Liberty for a possible motor vehicle collision. West Liberty Fire and Ambulance responded with 2 Ambulances and an Engine, West Liberty crews were the first on scene, arriving within 7 minutes from dispatch.
Crews discovered a single vehicle accident, with three total occupants. The vehicle left the roadway, rolling several times, coming to rest in a bean field with severe damage. Two occupants were able to get out of the wreckage prior to the arrival of any emergency services. The third occupant was partially ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The other two occupants were transported by West Liberty Ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Main Campus Trauma Center for their injuries. Elder Avenue remained closed for several hours. All West Liberty units were back in service by 0400hrs.
West Liberty Fire & EMS were assisted by: Iowa State Patrol, West Liberty Police Department,
Muscatine County Sherriffs Office, Muscatine County Medical Examiner, Midtown Towing. With mutual aid from Nichols Fire and AirCare requested but disregarded prior to their arrival.
