Two presentations are on the in-depth agenda for the Muscatine City Council Thursday (Jan., 9, 2025) as John Dabeet will discuss Sister Cities work in 2024 and Adam Raisbeck will discuss the upcoming 2025 Muscatine Triathlon.

The Council will then prepare for the annual budget sessions that will begin on January 30 with a Special City Council meeting with Finance Director Nancy Lueck providing an overview of the budget and the budget preparation process.

The public is welcomed, and encouraged, to attend when the Council meets at 6 p.m. Thursday in the City Council Chambers on the second flood of Muscatine City Hall.  The meeting is open to all individuals regardless of language spoken or disability. Any person requiring a reasonable accommodation to participate should contact the City Clerk’s office at 563-264-1550.

The City of Muscatine, following the founding of Muscatine Sister Cities Inc., in 1986, has established relationships with eight sister cities including: Parana, Argentina; Ludwigslust, Germany; Ichikawamisato, Japan; Ramallah, Palestine; Lomza, Poland; Kislovodsk, Russia; Drohobych, Ukraine; and, Zhending, China.

Dabeet is the president of Muscatine Sister Cities and also serves as a member of the Sister Cities International Honorary Board in Washington, D.C., a Global Leaders Circle member, and Global Outreach Representative of Country Palestine on Sister Cities International Board. He is also a professor at Muscatine Community College and a member of the Muscatine School District Board of Education.

Adam Raisbeck, who will serve as race director and is a member of the Muscatine Police Department, will provide an update on plans for the 2025 Muscatine Triathlon that will be held on August 2, 2025, at Deep Lakes Park. The Muscatine Triathlon’s mission is to promote overall good health, resilience, and community spirit by providing athletes of all levels a challenging and supportive environment to test their endurance and personal limits. The triathlon strives to create a fun, family-oriented event that celebrates Muscatine’s unique charm, fosters community connections, and encourages support for local businesses.

The weekend will also feature a “Taste of Muscatine” on August 1, and an “After Party” on August 2, both taking place in Downtown Muscatine.

The USA Triathlon sanction event is presented by Sqwincher and supported by the City of Muscatine, Muscatine County, the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, local law enforcement agencies, and sponsors from the private sector.
