One hurt, 86 residents evacuated from Muscatine Tower after fire Sunday morning


One person was injured and 86 residents were evacuated as the result of a fire at the Muscatine Tower Apartments Sunday morning.

The Muscatine County Joint Communications Center was notified at 9:44 a.m. of a fire in a seventh floor apartment at the Muscatine Tower Apartments, 106 E. 6th Street, Muscatine.

Upon arrival, the Muscatine Fire Department found one individual inside the apartment with injuries and were able to successfully rescue the individual and transport him to Unity Point Health – Trinity Muscatine for treatment.

The sprinkler system worked and the fire was contained to the apartment. After the fire was extinguished, the sprinkler system was turned off and the building was evacuated.

The building suffered extensive smoke and water damage and was still without power this afternoon.

Due to the damage, 86 residents from the Towers apartments were evacuated and transported either to local hotels or local relatives homes.

The American Red Cross, Salvation Army of Muscatine County, and Muscatine Non-Emergency Transport assisted with arranging and transports of residents.

The Muscatine Fire Department was assisted by units from Fruitland Fire Department and Wilton Fire Department, along with the Muscatine Police Department. The Salvation Army of Muscatine County also assisted with the evacuated residents.

Muscatine Tower Apartments is currently working to restore the sprinkler system to the complex and beginning cleanup operations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
